The Witness

The Witness is dedicated to Dr. David R. Hawkins and his students.

The illustrations comprise meditations and improvisations on Dr. Hawkins' works with references to the writings of Fr. Richard Rohr, Ken Wilber and Carl Jung. Additional stimulation was received from conversations in The Hawkins Study Group, Saratoga. The whole arose when Prasad Kaipa introduced me to Hawkins' Map of Consciousness and was developed in the context of several years of conversation with my Spiritual Director. The incorporated images are the works of Albrecht Durer and The Hubble Telescope.

The specific inspiration was Hawkins' goal suggested in Transcending the Levels of Consciousness, p.343, Disidentify with the body, mind, emotions and thoughts as 'me.'

The present illustrations and accompanying text are intended to capture, somewhat non-linearly, the essence of and relationships among the ego-based, sub-200 levels of negative emotions described by Hawkins, and with just a hint of what is to come beyond 200. Originally I had intended one or two illustrations; then the beginnings of a narrative emerged. The illustrations are entitled:

- Disidentifying With My Body, Mind, Emotions and Thoughts
- What Is
- My Life is All About Me
- Another Beginning
- The Unmoved Witness
- My life is not all about me - I am All About My Life
- The Witness - No Longer The Victim of My body, Mind, Emotions and Thoughts
- Prayer is Not About Changing God. Prayer is About Changing Me
- The Self
